Recently I had a conversation with a friend about this grade 10 student volunteer hours, more so their lack of hours.
this conversation comes up often, mostly because the kids don’t know how to look for volunteering or even what the whole idea means.
though it is a partnership between the student, school and parents, it is key to get the kids engaged early, even if it is just to do the research.
here are some tips to help get youth engaged.
have the youth list or talk about what they like to do (sports, computer, design, music)
have them do some research on the web, even looking at volunteer websites like Charityvillage.com where there are lots of positions
call a volunteer coordinator to chat , many position are not posted or can be customized to benefit both the agency and the youth.
many times, I had youth come during PA days to do research, or computer work, or editing.
there is so much that they have to give, but they just don’t know it yet.
